Local, seasonal flowers grown with love in Groombridge, East Sussex
My story
Iām Lucy and have always loved gardening and growing flowers. When we managed to acquire a beautiful acre plot of land near to our home I jumped at the chance to develop this passion further and start growing cut flowers to sell.
Over Easter weekend 2021, Derek ploughed up the field and we got to work deer proofing and making beds in which to grow the flowers, adding 10 tonnes of compost. Later in the Summer, my husband Jake and friend Lee built the polytunnel and so the Groombridge Cutting Garden was born.
My core belief is that we should buy locally and seasonally and keep our carbon footprint to a minimum. I am going to be growing English flowers and selling them from The Shop on the Corner (in Groombridge) and in Bidborough. You can also order flowers to collect or I can deliver locally around Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge.
Preparing the field
-
The Field
This is the field before work began. It already has some good shelter from the prevailing wind
-
Ploughing and fencing
The field was ploughed and 80 tonnes of compost incorporated to enrich the heavy clay. We also had to build a fence over 6ft high to keep out the deer.
-
Preparing the beds
I created beds using weed supressant membrane with wood chip paths to hopefully limit the weeds!
-
The polytunnel
Jake and Lee did a superb job building a 18m long polytunnel in a couple of weekends.
